5.0 out of 5 stars RARE CULT SPEED/THRASH METAL FROM THE UK!!!, October 21, 2008
By     T. Kasuboski (Winneconne, Wisconsin United States)

FINALLY!!! This is a release I’ve been dreaming about for years. HYDRA VEIN were a truly intense (at times bordering on both early black and death metal) thrashed-out speed metal group from the UK. They released two LP’s, 1988’s “Rather Death Than False Of Faith” and 89’s “After The Dream”. Long forgotten by many, HYDRA VEIN has long been considered one of those “lost greats” by fanatical fans of all early extreme metal pioneers. Hopefully this brilliant CD does much to expose HYDRA VEIN to a new generation of thrashers, so they can receive some of the credit they so brutally deserve. Musically, HYDRA VEIN was similar in sound to groups like MORBID SAINT (US), DEATHWISH (UK), MINOTAUR, POISON, ASSASSIN, and DARKNESS all from Germany, MORTUARY (Mexico), NUM SKULL (US), BLESSED DEATH (US), and at times a whole bunch of late-80’s South American groups like DEATH YELL, PENTAGRAM, ATOMIC AGGRESSOR, MUTILATOR, etc. Basically, HYDRA VEIN existed in that brief window in time when speed/thrash metal was at its most extreme but death metal was not quite a fully formed sub-genre. So what you get is heavy, high speed, hardcore punk influenced, post-SLAYER satanic metal. It was a killer brew from a specific time, roughly 1985-1989. Unfortunately, HYDRA VEIN’s debut sounded kind of muffled on vinyl (and the cassette release which had a little better sound was extremely rare outside the UK) and the cover art (which I still think totally rules!) for “Rather Death Than False Of Faith” was often mocked, but the first track “Rabid” for me easily ranks as one of the top 20 GREATEST speed/thrash tunes of all time!!! Thankfully, this CD has fixed the sound problem with BOTH LPs getting transferred to CD off the original MASTER TAPES!!! So HYDRA VEIN has NEVER sounded better. My ONLY gripe about the CD release is that the original cover art of the two LPs is not included and there is really no historical info. in the booklet, although there are a couple precious band shots (with a band this rare and long forgotten, any new pictures of the band is always a plus). Also, the release is dedicated to now dead vocalist Mike Keen and “After The Dream” guitarist Jon Balfour. So if have the Metal audacity to consider yourself a true 80’s thrash fanatic or Metal historian, this CD re-release of HYDRA VEIN’s two LP contributions to the history of extreme metal IS A MUST! If you pass on this, your missing out on the essence of DIY 80’s UK speed metal at its most rip-roaring best!!! They gave their young lives to the cause of Metal, and in the process produced two enduring classics which still remind me why I continue to hunt these old cult bands down after all these years…Long live the creature who adorns the cover of “Rather Death Than False Of Faith”, and thanks to HYDRA VEIN for giving us thrash loners a reason to headbang ’til it hurt!
